A well-known Harpenden woman celebrated her 90th birthday at a local church.

Brenda Ackroyd was given cake and a card after the usual church service at Batford Methodist Church on December 9.

Along with her husband Geoff, she ran Ackroyd’s Bakers - a family business on Station Road which was set up just before World War Two.

Geoff was a talented baker - in 1981 his three-tier wedding cake design was accepted by Buckingham Palace for the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana Spencer.

He married Brenda in August 1953 at the Batford Methodist Church, where she is still an active member of the congregation today.

Branda has four children called Christopher, Rachel, Miriam, and Mary, and six grandchildren.
