Ninety-five-year-old Willow Court resident George Goodman has loved boxing since age 10 and was a school boy champion, before he embarked on a 36-year career in the Merchant Navy.

Willow Court’s activity coordinator Tina Muchmore had heard George talking about Frank Bruno, his admiration for him, how he attended all his early fights and how he would love to meet the former world heavyweight champion.

Tina posted on social media and Frank Bruno’s personal assistant contacted her to organise the visit.

Willow Court’s home manager Sarah Adlam said: “It was such a lovely day from the moment George woke up knowing Frank was coming to visit him. Frank was so calm and laid-back when he arrived.

“They were chatting like old friends would. It meant so much to George, he was absolutely beaming with delight while some of us were struggling to hold back tears of happiness for him. All thanks go to Tina who had heard so many stories from George she had such determination she made this happen.

“I am so proud to have members of staff so dedicated to their jobs here at Willow Court, our residents our always at the heart of all we do and of course a special thank you to Frank Bruno MBE for granting George’s wish.”

George also received a signed copy of Frank Bruno’s latest book as a parting gift.
