A vintage biography of Abraham Lincoln is one of the rare and unusual items that can be found in Harpenden charity shops.
The two-volume collection ‘Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years’ can be found in the Cancer Research shop in High Street.
The book was written by Carl Sandburg and published in 1926, and is being sold for £30 in the shop.
Assistant manager Sarah Crowley said: “That’s been in here at least a month. We have one volunteer who will take the time to research old books and check their age.
“For vintage books it can be quite expensive, but because that’s such an old one, pre-1930s, it’s quite a reasonable price.”
Sandburg’s Abraham Lincoln biography was originally published in six volumes, and ‘The Prairie Years’ tells the story of the American president’s early life.
The second four-volume collection in the series, ‘Abraham Lincoln: The War Years’, won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1940.
The shop also had a rare German religious text go to auction a few years ago, which went to auction for £600.
Sarah said: “Probably the best thing about working in charity shops is you never know what you’re going to get.”
