Our Throwback Thursday highlight aims to show just how much the town has changed and evolved over time, using old pictures of what it used to be like.

This is a postcard of Harpenden High Street, looking very similar to how it does today - although just maybe with fewer cars.

According to the Harpenden Local History Society, most of the cottages along the High Street were timber-framed under the end of the nineteenth century and the parade of shops started taking shape from the 1890s.

It said there are dramatic photos which show the demolition of Polly Nott’s cottage to make way for shops at the corner of Vaughan Road around 1900.

Some of the historic buildings can still be seen today, for example the Old Cock Inn and The Cross Keys pubs.
