Harpenden can boast a number of celebrity residents over the decades, from musicians to comedians, photographers and presenters, and everything inbetween.

Our Starstruck Sunday series is putting the spotlight on some international icons and lots of unsung heros in the local community.

Not everyone can say their work has appeared in art galleries, they have set up their own business, or are creative for a living.

Even less people can say they’ve taken a photo which has been put on a stamp. But Richard Washbrooke can.

The freelance photographer was commissioned to capture Team GB at the London 2012 Paralympics, and happened to be assigned the Women’s 400m Freestyle one day.

It turned out to be Ellie Simmonds’ first gold medal winning race of the games, and Richard captured it all.

Soon after, he was surprised to find his image had been used on a special edition set of stamps issued by the Post Office to commemorate British gold medal winners.

He said: “It’s really rare in that there are not too many images that will appear on a stamp.

“It’s not everyday you have an image on a stamp and I was very proud. Ellie Simmonds is a fantastic athlete, I met her and she’s a lovely lady.”

Richard owns a freelance photography business at richardwashbrooke.photoshelter.com/
