Starstruck Sunday: Comedy legend an icon of Harpenden
PUBLISHED: 20:00 14 October 2018
Harpenden can boast a number of celebrity residents over the decades, from musicians to comedians, photographers and presenters, and everything inbetween.
Our Starstruck Sunday series is putting the spotlight on some international icons and lots of unsung heros in the local community.
Eric Morecambe, the comedy legend, lived in the town from the 1960s until his death in 1984.
Harpenden honours his memory with a plaque in St Nicholas’ churchyard, a metal silhouette in the Lea Valley Walk between Luton and Harpenden, and the town’s public halls named in tribute.
Local actor Bob Golding also appeared as Eric in Tim Whitnall’s play Morecambe.
The Herts Advertiser has an archive of Eric’s pictures, which were not published in the newspaper when they were taken in the 70s.
They have now been released - see them at enjoyharpendenmore.co.uk/news/unseen-photos-of-harpenden-s-eric-morecambe-1-5622461
