Local language school Lingua Fanatics has selected one outstanding student in French and one in Spanish from amongst some 400 students aged three to 11 years in 24 schools and private venues across Harpenden and the district.
Kate Speirs, owner of Lingua Fanatics said: “All of our teachers send in their nominations each term with their reasons and I select the one child who I think is the most deserving in each language.
“A very difficult decision given the local talent we have.”
The winner in French is Meredith Whittaker (from our St Nicholas Church Hall reception French class).
Meredith was nominated by her teacher Fiona who said: “Meredith is always very enthusiastic in the class and remembers so many of the new words we’ve been learning. She often makes links with previous vocabulary we’ve learned, which is great.”
Meredith said: “I like French because I like singing ‘un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq je m’appelle ... Meredith’. That’s my favourite song.”
The winner in Spanish is Florence Clark (year 4 at Sauncey Wood Primary School, Harpenden).
Her teacher Paola said: “She has shown great progress in Spanish and always wants to speak, read, act out role plays, sing and learn new phrases.”
Florence said: “I love Spanish as it allowed me to speak when I was on holiday. I was really pleased when people understood.
“Paola is a very fun teacher!”
Lingua Fanatics, (one of La Jolie Ronde’s largest licensees in the UK), provides French and Spanish classes for over 400 babies, toddlers and primary school children in Harpenden, Wheathampstead and St Albans.
Kate also offers GCSE tuition and lessons for adults. Kate said: “We are so proud of all our students and it is really hard to select for this award but Meredith and Florence certainly deserve recognition for their excellence in languages. “
