A European politician visited some of her spikier constituents in Harpenden to raise awareness of plummeting hedgehog numbers.

Hertfordshire MEP Alex Mayer went to Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary on Common Lane in Harpenden as part of a push to save the iconic creatures.

According to the State of Britain's Hedgehogs report, the animals have declined by a third since 2000.

MEP Alex said: "Hedgehogs are in a bit of a prickle at the moment but it is great to find out hog lovers everywhere can do their bit to help our prickly friends."

Martin Maylin founded Batford's Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary in 2015 on the site of a former animal sanctuary called The Grahame Dangerfield Wildlife Trust.

MEP Alex visited the charity to find out how the charity helps sick, injured and underweight hedgehogs, learning how to make gardens safe spaces for the animals.
