Two Harpenden girls have seized the opportunity to sing in a production of The Snowman at the Public Halls.

Both girls successfully passed auditions to sing with Hitchin Band who will be performing live music to accompany the classic animation.

The show was a huge sell-out last year in Hitchin, which is why it is now showing in Harpenden also.

Julia Swapp, 14, of Ox Lane said: “I have loved singing all my life and The Snowman has been part of my family Christmas for as long as I can remember.

“We watch it as a family every Christmas and it is an essential part of our festive traditions.

“My earliest memories of it are as a magical journey that I wanted to be a part of.”

Amy Walker, of Barnfield Road who is just ten years old will be singing alongside Julia at the performance.

Musically directed by Graham Chambers, the show marks the 40th anniversary of Raymond Briggs’ wonderful book The Snowman.

The animated film was made in 1982, featuring music by Howard Blake and the song ‘Walking In The Air’ was made famous by Aled Jones.

Hitchin Band is a traditional brass band that recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and after a series of competition prizes has earned its place in the elite Championship division of the British Brass Band Championships.

Performances are at Harpenden Public Halls on Sunday, December 9. Tickets are available from the venue box office www.harpendenpublichalls.co.uk.
