A Harpenden schoolboy has been selected to compete for the national fencing team.

Jacob Barr will join the under 13 England sabre squad when they go to a competition in Poland next March.

The Year 8 Aldwickbury School pupil started fencing when he was in Year 3 at the Paul Davis Fencing Academy and is now, at 12 years old, ranked number eight in the whole country.

He dreams one day of competing in the Olympics. Jacob said: “I was really pleased to receive the news that I had been selected for the U13 England sabre squad. Fencing has helped with my fitness and enabled me to make new friends.”

Director of sport at Aldwickbury School, Eddie Panting, said: “At Aldwickbury we believe there is a sport for everyone to enjoy. It is inspiring to see that Jacob has pursued his passion to a high level.”

Headmaster at the school, Vernon Hales, also congratulated Jacob on the achievement.
