Sports Teams of Yesteryear: Harpenden Rugby Club 1974

Whether it’s cricket on the Common, rugby in the fields, golf on the fairways, football, bowling, tennis or any of the other activities which take place in Harpenden, we want to celebrate the rich history of sport in the town.
We will be publishing a variety of old photos and newspaper clippings featuring different teams and sports from across the decades, and need your help to fill in the blanks if we can’t identify the date or the names of all the players.
This week we have a line-up from Harpenden Rugby Club taken in 1974, supplied by Richard White.
He writes: “The man in the middle is Bob Bashford who was a good captain. On his right is scrum-half Brian Cotter who left the club to play and coach Transvaal.
“Far right is well-known ref called Tony Wortley. The man in the head band at the rear is former Saracen Ian McCombie.
“Second in a the back (next to me) is one of Harpenden’s first-class back row players, Dave Parry, who had a south of England trial. Unfortunately, due to overseas committments, he was never a regular attendee. Front left is my vice-captain in the following season, Geoff Little (also ex-Saracens), who on his right has John Adams - a very quick runner who was a county champion.”
Thanks to Richard for this contribution.
