Harpenden town councillor Mary Maynard was one of the women nominated in the poll to find Harpenden’s most inspirational woman.
Mary has lived in the town for more than 35 years and is both a town and a district councillor. She described herself as concerned with the preservation of what makes Harpenden and the rest of the district a great place to live, as well as planning for future development.
She is currently leading the upgrade of the children’s play area in Marquis Lane, and over the last few years has been involved in Batford Springs campaigning to improve the river and create better access with raised walkways.
Mary has also been involved with SOS Children’s Villages for more than 18 years, served on their international senate for eight years, and is currently chair of their UK organisation.
The charity supports orphaned and abandoned children around the world, giving them a home, a family and an education.
Mary said: “These children are left with no family, in often desperate circumstances, in countries where there is no safety net. It is a great privilege to be able to help them.”
