A well-loved Harpenden club has celebrated its diamond anniversary with tea, cake, and painting.

The Harpenden Arts Club was founded in 1958 by Betty Hopkinson, who wrote an article appealing for like-minded art lovers in the local newspaper and booked a meeting room in Mary Ellen’s tea shop, now Inn on the Green.

More than 50 people arrived for the club’s first meeting 60 years ago, and now it has more than 130 members.

Members enjoy art demonstrations, life drawing sessions and technique workshops on Thursday evenings from September to May in the small Public Hall from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

There are also opportunities for members to display their work at a variety of venues, including the Rothamsted Conference Centre.

Betty Hopkinson, who is now 98-years-old, thoroughly enjoys receiving the regular newsletter from the Harpenden Arts Club.

The 60th Annual Art Exhibition will start from November 9 at Harpenden Public Halls.
