A fun and inclusive football tournament for children took place in Harpenden last week.

On January 26, Harpenden Colts Football Club hosted eight teams in a fun football tournament at the Roundwood Park School sports hall.

All of the teams are members of the Herts Youth Inclusive Football group, who work with Watford FC and the Hertfordshire FA to provide children with disabilities in the county with the opportunity to play football.

“I was very impressed with all of the teams; they played really well,” said Tracy Light, Herts Youth Inclusive secretary. “The indoor tournament was a great experience for the players, especially some of the younger ones who hadn’t experienced matches before.”

Harpenden Colts Inclusive was one of the teams with several young players who were new to competitive matches.

The squad is the inclusive section of the popular, 1000 player-strong, Harpenden Colts FC.

The inclusive section meets regularly for fun, free training sessions in Rothamsted Park. The sessions are a great way for children aged six and over, with any physical or learning impairment, to experience the physical, mental and social benefits of football.

The tournament was organised by Karen Stephanou, Watford FC Disability Football development manager, as part of a programme of tournaments and festivals for Herts Youth Inclusive Football.

Karen said: “Roundwood Park Sports Hall was a fantastic venue for our annual indoor tournament. The teams all really enjoyed themselves and we saw some impressive displays of footballing skills, some brilliant goal-keeping and a number of entertaining goal celebrations!”.

The other teams competing in the tournament were inclusive squads from Everett Rovers FC, Hemel Aces FC, Bedwell Rangers FC and St Albans City Youth FC. The players all received medals, and trophies were presented to the winning teams by Steve Maker, Hertfordshire FA’s Football development officer (disability).

The next Herts Youth Inclusive Football event will be a Football Festival on Saturday February 16 at Hemel Hempstead School with registration at 10:45am.
