A Harpenden woman is working with veterans to help their scars heal.

Emma Holly of Wells Close has returned from an Invictus training camp where she gave ScarWork therapy to people who have injuries as a result of serving in the forces.

ScarWork is similar to massage but without the use of oil. The specific techniques Emma uses release scar tissue caused by surgery or trauma.

She volunteers her services with Help4Heroes at the Invictus Games training camps where veterans are introduced to new sporting activities or they try out for the games.

Emma said that the weekends can be exhausting for the veterans, but the team morale is high and support from staff helps them to achieve new goals.

Emma has a clinic where private patients see her for one-to-one ScarWork sessions in her therapy room next to her home. The Invictus camps are in a range of venues in the UK and are used to select people and prepare them for next year's Invictus Games.

Emma and her team set up therapy tables and give free treatments all day. She finds the work really rewarding. She said:

"It is just such as incredible thing to be able to give back to people who have given so much to our country. Sometimes veterans are at such a low ebb and they really get a sense of calm from the treatments."

Emma added: "They are often surprised that though the therapy is so gentle, the impact is instant and often very beneficial in pain reduction."

A patient at a recent camp with a spinal cord injury, Alan Izzard, said: "My back was very sore prior to treatment due to the vigorous workouts. Since my treatment my back has relaxed and released and the pain has all but gone. I can not recommend the assistance enough."

ScarWork can help both on a physical level to release and soften the scars, but also on an emotional level.

Gentle touch and the holistic treatment approach makes a marked change from traditional scar tissue massage techniques.
