This is Chloe Strange’s well-deserved winning picture for the Harpenden Art Society competition.

Sixteen-year-old Chloe was named overall winner of the competition for her portrait of an elephant.

The competition was held by the art societies Harpenden Evening and Harpenden Area, who invited seven to 18-year-olds to submit paintings, photography, sculpture and textiles.

An exhibition was held at the end of June, which was attended by Deputy Mayor Brian Ellis. He presented 17 prizes for different categories and age groups, with 16 entries given ‘highly commended’ awards.

All winning and highly commended entries were featured in the exhibition, with a rolling display of photos of all the other entries.

The competition was run jointly by both societies to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arts Society, which is a national charity supporting interest in the arts and helping to promote young artists.
